November is a month in Canada and many other countries around the world, where we pause to remember those no longer with us.

On November the 11th, we pause to remember the veterans of war and peace keeping missions. Those men and women who served and those who gave their lives for freedom and liberty.

On November 20th, we pause to remember the victims of gender identity based violence. Those individuals who were attacked and or killed for seeking to express who they truly are. To live their lives in freedom and liberty.

Dayne Moyer from the group organizing this year’s Trans Day of Remembrance Event, states in a recent press release: “The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) originated as a reaction to the murder of Rita Hester, a young transgender woman of colour in the United States. The inaugural TDoR event in Winnipeg was held shortly after the murder of Divas Boulanger, an Indigenous transgender woman in our own city. Locally, TDoR has brought together hundreds of LGBTQ* community members and their allies in solidarity for those who experience this unacceptable reality. The reality that every day and a half, someone is murdered for living honestly. The reality that since 2008, there have been 1,509 reported transgender murders with countless additional cases having gone unreported. And finally, the reality that this hatred and violence transcends age, race, sexual identity, and socioeconomic standing.”

On behalf of the LGBTT* Initiative, I invite members of the Red River College community to gather with others to acknowledge this important day. The event will take place at Crossways in Common at 222 Furby Street with doors opening at 6:00 pm and the ceremony at 6:30 pm. This event is free and accessible to all and will have gender inclusive washrooms available. After the memorial, light refreshments will be served.

For more information on the event, please contact Dayne Moyer at 204-786-9790.
